Dates below are the usual Western (tropical) ranges. The Sun changes sign at a slightly different moment each year, so if you were born on the first or last day of a sign, check the exact year.

The zodiac is a belt of sky centred on the ecliptic, the path the Sun appears to take across the year. Ancient astronomers divided it into 12 equal sections of 30 degrees and named each after a nearby constellation. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts the year at the spring equinox (the start of Aries). It stays anchored to the seasons, not to the constellations, which have drifted since the system was set.
